Carla in London

First Lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy manages to find the camera as she and her Napoleon-sized husband Nicolas and Prince Chuck find their way to a statue of Charles de Gaulle in London, where they laid a wreath to commemorate de Gaulle's broadcast to Nazi occupied France on June 17, 1940, in which he declared himself the leader of the "Free French," which went on play a key role in defeating the Germans.

The full text of de Gaulle's speech is inscribed in a plaque on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris:
"The leaders who, for many years, have been at the head of the French armies have formed a government. This government, alleging the defeat of our armies, has made contact with the enemy in order to stop the fighting. It is true, we were, we are, overwhelmed by the mechanical, ground and air forces of the enemy. Infinitely more than their number, it is the tanks, the airplanes, the tactics of the Germans which are causing us to retreat. It was the tanks, the airplanes, the tactics of the Germans that surprised our leaders to the point of bringing them to where they are today.
But has the last word been said? Must hope disappear? Is defeat final? No!
Believe me, I who am speaking to you with full knowledge of the facts, and who tell you that nothing is lost for France. The same means that overcame us can bring us victory one day. For France is not alone! She is not alone! She is not alone! She has a vast Empire behind her. She can align with the British Empire that holds the sea and continues the fight. She can, like England, use without limit the immense industry of the United States.
This war is not limited to the unfortunate territory of our country. This war is not over as a result of the Battle of France. This war is a worldwide war. All the mistakes, all the delays, all the suffering, do not alter the fact that there are, in the world, all the means necessary to crush our enemies one day. Vanquished today by mechanical force, in the future we will be able to overcome by a superior mechanical force. The fate of the world depends on it.
I, General de Gaulle, currently in London, invite the officers and the French soldiers who are located in British territory or who might end up here, with their weapons or without their weapons, I invite the engineers and the specialized workers of the armament industries who are located in British territory or who might end up here, to put themselves in contact with me.

Whatever happens, the flame of the French resistance must not be extinguished and will not be extinguished. Tomorrow, as today, I will speak on the radio from London."
France was occupied by the Germans for over four years. Paris was liberated August 25, 1944.

Betty Deuce in "Hello, Rwanda"

And people say my place is a little busy!

That's Betty Deuce, receiving credentials from the Rwandan High Commissioner (and he'd have to be high to be wearing that!) Ernest Rwamucyo, in her parlor at Buckingham Palace today.

I do hope she accepts them, because they look so fabulous together; like Laura Ashley meets Robert Rauschenberg at Hearst Castle. They look as though they're about to break into song and dance! He's even got a cane!

The Power of Facebook

Great, through Facebook, we got Betty White to host "SNL." Now let's see what we can do about world peace. And getting Katie Couric to pronounce "ing" at the ends of words, instead of saying "een."

Camilla -- She Can Walk!

Praise God in all his glory, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, can walk! Hallelujah!

Her gorgeousness used crutches to rise from her chair to present medals to soldiers returning from Afghanistan. She also debuted her new scooter!

As you can see by Cam's expression, riding that thing is even more fun after a flask of gin (as many of you already know).

Out of respect for the returning soldiers, I will not discuss her hat.

Betty Deuce: It's Not Easy Being Queen

If you've never run into an old queen on a train, here's what it looks like. Can't you just smell the lilacs?

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II is seen sitting in the compartment of a steam train on her way to visit North Wales.

As you can see in this photo of Betty on her arrival, she looks mighty cheery in pink!

Buddhas Survive Quake

Health workers spray disinfectant at a collapsed temple in Yushu, China, where soldiers rescued these giant Buddhas from a collapsed temple following the 4/14 quake.

The death toll reached 2,046 in Qinghai Province, with 193 people still missing.

And now, 15 sayings of the ancient Buddhists, not in a flip-through gallery:

There is no sweet companion like pure charity.
-Foshohingtsanking

Almsgiving, it is said, constitutes the value of riches.
-Jatakamala

Good is restraint in all things.
-Dhammapada

Unselfishness, truth, and self-control.
-Jataka

Though a man conquer a thousand thousand men in battle, a greater conqueror still is he who conquers himself.
-Udanavarga

Root out the love of self.
-Jataka

The man of honor should minister to his friends... by liberality, courtesy, benevolence, and by doing to them as he would be done by.
-Sigalovada-sutta.

Practice the art of "giving up."
-Foshohingtsanking

Speak not harshly to anybody.
-Dhammapada

May I speak kindly and softly to every one I chance to meet.
-Inscription in Temple of Nakhon Vat.

Offensive language is harsh even to the brutes.
-Suttavaddhananiti

Courtesy is the best ornament. Beauty without courtesy is like a grove without flowers.
-Buddha-charita

He knew not the art of hypocrisy.
-Jataka

As he who loves life avoids poison, so let the sage avoid sinfulness.
-Udanavarga

He sees danger in even the least of those things he should avoid.
-Tevijja-sutta.

Camilla in Purple

Camilla's in Budapest, and busted out her purple duds for the Hungarians, and that's either some new lip liner or she's getting sloppy with her morning coffee again. And no, that's not some new Hungarian pastry... that's her hair.

Camilla -- Oy, Such a Shonda Already

Chuck and Camilla continued their Eastern Euro tour today with a stop at the Memorial of the Hungarian Jewish Martyrs in Budapest, a holocaust memorial, where Camilla's frock coat showed what could be done with leftover Buckingham Palace linens.

No Jews died after seeing Camilla.

Except me.

Rep. Patrick Kennedy Rips the Press

He was shouting himself hoarse in support of a measure from Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, that would end the war in Afghanistan.

Kennedy, son of Ted, has announced his retirement at the end of the current term. Here's Pat going off on the press. I think he means "fed up" or "fit to be tied" -- but he just says "fit."

Chandler's Watch reports that Kennedy got fired up when a Republican lawmaker said that ending the war would send a message of surrender to the family of a soldier killed in Afghanistan last year.

“Someone — I can’t believe I even heard this — said, ‘Oh, I can’t go to a funeral and tell the parents of someone who just died that they lost their child in vain,’” Kennedy shouted with his eyes closed.

“Somewhere I heard that during the Vietnam War,” he yelled. “So what is it we got to do? We got to double down on a bad policy to protect the honor of those who have already died? I don’t think so.”

“There isn’t a solider in this country who’s laid down their lives for our nation that isn’t a hero. And no one in here disagrees with that. What is shameful is our policy that puts them in harm’s way when they don’t need to be.”

Betty Deuce in Diamonds

Her Majesty, Betty Deuce, whipped out the royal jewels for the Buckingham Palace State Dinner for South African President Jacob Zuma.

That tiara she's got on is the Kokoshnik Tiara, composed of 61 platinum bars filled with 488 diamonds; the largest are 3.25 carats. Just a little trinket. (click the pic for a better look)

Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII, commissioned Garrard's to create the tiara in the style of a Russian peasant girl's headdress. Some peasant.

Betty Deuce Meets Annie Lennox

"I really like that "Keep Young and Beautiful" song, my dear."

"Do you think I can get MY hair to look like that?"

Betty Deuce met Annie Lennox at a Buckingham Palace reception in preparation for the visit of the South African president. That's Business Secretary Lord Mandelson in the back.

Here's the 1933 original with Eddy Cantor. See if you can spot the young Lucille Ball in the first closeup.

Another Thing to Fix

Can't a guy catch a break?

While on vacation in Hawaii, President Obama took time out from his time out to address the nation's concerns about security lapses in the foiled plot to blow up a jetliner on Christmas.

The CIC said he'd get things fixed right away.

And then he went back to his vacation.

Feel better now?
